Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero
left
Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero is a direct-to-video animated continuance of Batman: The Animated Series.
The cryogenic chamber keeping Mr. Freeze's wife Nora alive is damaged in an accident, and Nora will die without an organ transplant. Mr. Freeze returns with her to Gotham City, where he enlists the assistance of Dr. Belson, a former colleague now undergoing financial difficulties, who agrees to perform the operation if a suitable organ can be found. None are available that will suit Nora, who has a rare blood type, so Mr. Freeze resolves to kidnap a suitable "donor". After a search of the city's medical records, he sets his sights on Barbara Gordon - who is also, although Mr. Freeze of course does not know this, Batgirl. After Mr. Freeze kidnaps Barbara, he becomes the target of a police manhunt led by her father, Commissioner James Gordon, and a separate search by Batman and Robin. Batman and Robin discover the location of Mr. Freeze's hideout - an abandoned oil platform - and set out to rescue Barbara (who in the mean time proves a difficult prisoner who repeatedly nearly manages to escape on her own). During the climactic fight, the oil rig goes up in flames; Batman, Robin, and Batgirl escape, with the help of an injured Freeze, taking Nora with them, Despite his efforts Mr. Freeze doesn't escape and apparently perishes in the explosion. In an epilogue, Mr. Freeze - having escaped the blaze with the help of his pet polar bears - has returned to the Arctic, where he receives news that Nora has received treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. He walks into the distance, with a relieved smile on his face, with his polar bears.
[edit] Continuity
- Renee Montoya is promoted from officer to sergeant; she would later be transferred from beat to Special Crimes.
[edit] Background Information
[edit] Production Inconsistencies
- Veronica Vreeland is portrayed as a blonde rather than a redhead, though it may have been done to prevent confusion with Barbara Gordon.
- When Bruce opens the donor file, the fields for sex, height, weight and blood type are already filled in, though the date do not match Barbara's. In the next shot, the fields are empty again.
[edit] Trivia
- "Am I Blue?", the 1929 jazz standard written by Harry Akst and Grant Clarke, is featured in this film, heard playing on the radio of Barbara Gordon's roommate. The song would later appear in the Justice League Unlimited episode "This Little Piggy", where Batman would perform the song in order to rescue Wonder Woman from an enchantment.
- This appears to be one of the few instances where Veronica Vreeland seems to explicitly be Bruce Wayne's date, rather than his friend.
- This is also the first time Barbara Gordon and Dick Grayson are officially seen as a couple.
