Some time back, Lois Lane wrote an article about police corruption that somehow caused Bowman to lose a promotion. After this, he became deeply embittered with her, and after an attempt was made on her life, he made little effort to find her killer and was suspected of being the murderer. It turned out the culprit was really Edward Lytener.[1]
Bowman's corruption went deeper than simply refusing to conduct proper investigations. For unknown reasons, Bowman murdered a wealthy woman and afterwards framed Ernest Walker for the murder. He succeeded in his attempt, and five years later, Walker was scheduled to be executed. However, Clark Kent started an investigation of his own and soon discovered that Walker was innocent. Fearful that this evidence would bring up a new investigation that could possibly expose him, Bowman tried to assassinate him with a car bomb. However, he underestimated Lois' investigative abilities and she and Superman soon figured out that he was the real murderer. When Lois confronted him, he tried to kill her as well. Superman saved her and caught Bowman. The tables were turned on him and he was executed, but not before realizing that Clark Kent was really Superman. However, he came to this realization inside the gas chamber and the switch releasing the gas was thrown two seconds after he deduced Clark's secret identity.
