Mantis arrived to Earth during Apokolips' civil war. Thinking Earth would be an easy conquer, which Darkseid failed at, Mantis attempted to conquer Metropolis. However, Superman and Captain Atom came up and battled Mantis. In the battle, Superman activated Mantis' Mother Box and Captain Atom blasted him into the Boom Tube. Destroying his Mother Box, Mantis didn't come back.
Later, in Apokolips' civil war, Mantis and Kanto sided with Vermin Vunderbar's faction against Granny Goodness. When Darkseid returned from the dead, Mantis assumed his loyalty towards him.

Mantis was originally a Bug from New Genesis, who pledged loyalty to Darkseid in exchange for great power. Darkseid gave Mantis incredible power, making him the second most powerful being on Apokolips. Mantis has a long history of intrigue against Darkseid, who has consistently put down his rebellions.
