A New God was a deity that hailed from one of two extra-dimensional worlds — New Genesis, lead by Highfather, and Apokolips, ruled by Darkseid. Together, the beings of these worlds comprised the two equal and opposing forces of the New God's pantheon- New Genesis representing virtue and light, Apokolips representing darkness and evil.
Many New Gods have powers that function in a manner similar to those of Earth's superhuman community, ranging from self-powered flight to projection of energy blasts. Unlike other pantheons of mythology and legend, New Gods rely on advanced technology as much as they do their own inherent powers and abilities. Often this technology, such as the Mother Box, borders on the magical.

[edit] Unknown
The following New Gods were shown along side other citizens of New Genesis, but their position has been traditionally one of neutrality. It is unclear which world they hail from.
[edit] The War
The respective natures of the New Gods of New Genesis and Apokolips resulted in a war that has lasted untold ages. The conflict was, in the past, temporarily abated by a pact engaged by Highfather and Darkeseid, wherein the two rulers exchanged their own infant sons in the name of peace. Sometime after their children had become adults, Darkseid broke the pact, renewing their ancient hostilites. With the death, resurrection and later disappearance of Darkseid, the state of the war remains unknown.
[edit] Background information
The New Gods were created by Jack Kirby as part of the Fourth World series. The Fourth World was intended to be a stand alone creation, but Kirby left DC comics before the series was ended. The New Gods were then brought into the mainstream DC universe, with Darkseid becoming one of Superman's major rogues.
During Countdown to Final Crisis, the New Gods were killed as the Source hoped to create a Fifth World. However, Darkseid and his minions recently resurfaced on Earth.
