[edit] Background Information

  • The episode is based on the comics story "A View from the Grave!" (Detective Comics #410, April 1971) by Dennis O'Neil.
  • Richard refers to Shakespeare's, and the quote is from Richard III.
  • Other Shakespearean references include:
    • "rudely stamp'd" (a reference to Richard being born deformed, a hunchback):
But I,—that am not shap'd for sportive tricks,
Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;
I, that am rudely stamp'd, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph;

— Richard III, Richard III, Act I: Scene 1

    • "the evil that men do"
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones:
So let it be with Caesar.

— Antony, Julius Caesar, Act III: Scene 2
