"You're the human lock-pick, why don't you do this?"
Lex Luthor[1]

The Key was a supervillain and a member of Grodd's Legion of Doom.

History[]

The Key was originally sent by Grodd to help Lex Luthor escape from prison and bring him to the Hall of Doom in order to make him a member of the Legion of Doom. His next mission was to accompany Luthor and Doctor Polaris to Blackhawk Island to steal the Spear of Longinus for Grodd. The Justice League intervened and Key was knocked out by the Flash, but they escaped when Luthor threatened to kill Chuck Sirianni. They returned to the Hall of Doom and Luthor learned that Grodd only wanted the Spear to hang it at his office.[1] When Luthor turned against Grodd, Key slightly smiles at his Legion's change of leadership.[2]

During the Legion mutiny, The Key sided with Grodd's faction against Luthor. As a result, he was among the Legionnaires frozen by Killer Frost and subsequently destroyed by Darkseid.[3]

Background information[]

In the DVD commentary for the Justice League Unlimited episode "Alive!", the production team stated that the original concept for The Key was that he would have been a Brainiac construct, allowing him to monitor the actions of the Legion of Doom and eventually re-merge with Lex Luthor during the season finale. This accounts for his prominence in "I Am Legion" and his voice by Corey Burton. However, the idea was ultimately abandoned in favor of resurrecting Darkseid.
